Resilience Recipes for Recovery and Energy with 7 Superfood Boosts
In the early stages of my recovery journey — navigating trauma, exhaustion, and the aftermath of a severe concussion — my body and mind were so depleted that even the smallest tasks felt impossible. Walking down the hallway to the kitchen took everything I had. When I did make it there, I often collapsed into survival mode — grabbing junk food, not because I didn’t know better, but because it was the only comfort I could manage. For a few minutes it gave me warmth and safety, but the tradeoff was steep: I ended up feeling weaker, foggier, and more drained than before.

Then came one small change that shifted everything: smoothies. At a time when cooking a full meal felt overwhelming, they required almost no effort yet delivered real nourishment. Each blend became more than just food — it was a reminder that I could still take a step, however small, toward healing. Every smoothie felt like a quiet act of resilience, helping rebuild strength, restore mental clarity, and give my nervous system something steady to rely on.
To make this possible, I bought a blender — and quickly realized not all of them could do what I needed. The cheaper ones struggled with fibrous ingredients like vegetables or flaxseed, and their small pitchers made it hard to prepare enough to last through the day. Finding one that could process whole ingredients smoothly, while letting me make bigger batches, made all the difference. It gave me a simple way to nourish myself, even on the days when I had almost no energy left.
In those early days, two recipes in particular became staples: the Blueberry Peanut Butter Power Smoothie and the Chocolate Cherry Recovery Smoothie. They weren’t just recipes — they were tools that helped me move from survival mode back into a state of hope and healing.
Both are packed with slow-burning carbs, greens, and healing nutrients designed to stabilize energy, calm your system, and help your body rebuild.

🌱 Ingredient Boosts | Supercharge Your Smoothie
Want to take your smoothies to the next level? Here are some powerhouse add-ins I used during recovery to boost energy, focus, and healing. You don’t need all of them at once — experiment with one or two that fit your needs.
- Beet Powder (½–1 tbsp)
Supports circulation and oxygen delivery to muscles and brain. Helpful for reducing fatigue and improving stamina during recovery. (shop beet powder) - Spirulina (½–1 tsp) — A nutrient-dense blue-green algae with plant protein, B vitamins, and antioxidants. Great for immune health. (shop spirulina powder)
*skip if you have super greens powder - Ground Flaxseed (1–2 tbsp)
Adds fiber and omega-3s for heart health and digestive balance. Also stabilizes blood sugar to prevent crashes. (shop ground flaxseed) - Lion’s Mane Mushroom Powder (½–1 tsp)
Known for supporting brain health, focus, and neuroplasticity. A gentle way to help rebuild mental clarity after trauma or concussion. (shop lion’s mane powder) - Maca Powder (1 tsp)
A natural adaptogen that supports energy, hormonal balance, and mood regulation. Adds a subtle malty, nutty flavor. (shop maca powder) - Raw Cacao Nibs or Powder (1 tbsp)
Rich in magnesium and antioxidants. Boosts mood and provides a natural energy lift without the crash of caffeine. (shop cacao powder) - Turmeric (¼–½ tsp, with a pinch of black pepper)
A potent anti-inflammatory that helps calm the body and support joint and muscle recovery. Black pepper increases absorption. (shop turmeric powder)
Pro Tip: Start small with these add-ins — especially beet, spirulina, and turmeric powders, since their flavors can be strong. Rotate them throughout the week to give your body variety without overwhelming your taste buds. Personally, I like to combine ground flaxseed with lion’s mane, beet, and maca powders in almost all of my smoothies. The coloring may shift a bit (mostly from the beet powder), but I’ve found these ingredients work wonderfully together.

More Than A Smoothie
These smoothies are more than recipes — they’re tools for resilience. Each sip reminded me that healing doesn’t always come in dramatic breakthroughs. Sometimes it’s found in small, nourishing acts repeated day after day. You may not have the energy to do much right now. But if you start giving your body the nutrition it needs to heal, you will begin to see positive changes — both in your energy and in your resilience.
🧡 A Note from Me
When I say these resilience recipes and routines matter, it’s because they were my lifeline. There was a time when I could barely make it through the day — concussions, trauma, addiction, and isolation had stripped me down to nothing. Even the smallest tasks felt impossible, and I often wondered if I would ever find my way back.
In those moments, practices like these weren’t just habits — they were survival. Blending a smoothie, taking a short walk, or choosing nourishment over numbness gave me just enough strength to keep going. One small act at a time, they became stepping stones, carrying me slowly out of the darkness.
At first, survival was all I could hope for — just getting through the next hour, the next night, the next storm inside my body and mind. But over time, I discovered that survival was only the starting point. With each small act, I wasn’t just staying alive — I was slowly teaching my body and mind how to live again.
That’s why I share them with you now. This isn’t just about surviving. It’s about reclaiming strength, clarity, and hope until you realize you’re not just surviving anymore — you’re thriving. And the truth is, that same possibility already lives inside of you. All it takes is a little courage — and that first small step — to begin unlocking it.
