7 Pillars of Trauma Recovery Pillar 3

In the thick of trauma recovery, it’s easy to believe that pain — physical, emotional, or spiritual — is permanent. But Pillar 3 of the 7 Pillars of Trauma Recovery challenges that illusion with one simple truth:

Everything is temporary.

You may not feel it in the moment, but every experience — no matter how intense — passes.

After trauma, our nervous system struggles to recognize this impermanence. The pain feels like forever. The flashbacks loop endlessly. The weight of your past seems welded to your present.

But I want you to pause for a moment and consider this:

Even in the eye of a storm, there’s calm.

Your Brain Isn’t Broken — It’s Stuck

The human brain, specifically the neocortex, is designed to find and prioritize recurring patterns. After trauma, this system goes into overdrive. It starts filtering the world through a survival-based lens, amplifying fear, pain, and shame — even when the threat is long gone.

This is how we get “stuck in the past.”

But here’s the good news: you can train your brain to notice what’s going right — to find the moments of safety, peace, and rest that are already present in your day.

You May Already Be Experiencing Temporary Relief (Without Realizing It)

The image reinforces the message that everything is temporary in recovery after trauma.

These moments matter. They are proof that everything is temporary — including the worst of it.

Stop Fighting. Start Accepting.

One of the most life-changing lessons I learned in recovery was this:

Fighting the pain adds more pain.
Accepting the moment creates peace.

When you fight what you’re feeling, your body tenses. Your breath shortens. Your nervous system spikes.

But when you accept your current state, even if it’s unpleasant, something shifts. You reclaim control.

It’s like being trapped beneath rubble. Fighting wastes energy and creates panic. But if you lie still, breathe, and trust the rescue is coming, your body relaxes — and your mind regains clarity.

Everything Is Temporary Becomes a Mantra

Repeating this phrase changed my life:

Everything is temporary.

Every time I felt crushed by shame, panic, pain, or exhaustion, I whispered it.

Eventually, my brain started to believe it.

It helped me:

  • Separate negative experiences from positive ones
  • Recognize slight improvements in my mood
  • Reinforce the idea that even chronic pain fluctuates
  • Rebuild my tolerance for physical and emotional discomfort

This shift didn’t just happen overnight.
But as I leaned into the temporary nature of all things, my nervous system adapted. And slowly, the scale began to tip — from overwhelm to opportunity.

Rewiring Through Pattern Recognition

As you begin to notice these shifting tides, allow yourself to experience moments of safety and ease — even the small ones. These experiences help your brain learn a new truth:

Not everything in your environment is a threat.
Not everything will lead to shame, embarrassment, or pain.

And the more you reinforce this, the more your body records it as real.
Eventually, the positive experiences start to outweigh the negative ones.
And that’s when your healing accelerates.

That’s when you begin to grow and shine in ways you didn’t think were possible.
