7 Pillars of Trauma Recovery Pillar 2
Healing after a traumatic experience can feel like trying to navigate a labyrinth.
Calendars filled with medical appointments. Flashbacks leading to dissociation. Emotional outbursts followed by isolation. Sleepless nights from chronic pain. Confusion that turns to paranoia. Hypervigilance that turns every conversation into a threat. Any hope of maintaining a normal existence quickly vanishes.
Strange behavioral patterns start forming. You begin to isolate — not because you want to, but because your body is screaming for protection.
This wasn’t me growing up. I was a gregarious, social kid who loved connecting with people. But after a traumatic brain injury and the reactivation of childhood trauma, everything changed.
My threat response was in overdrive, and I no longer recognized the version of myself that couldn’t walk into a room without scanning for danger.
Turning Recovery Into Purpose
I tried to manage it alone at first. But I quickly realized that wasn’t going to work.
I sought medical help and was prescribed medications for anxiety, depression, and ADHD (to assist with focus).
At first, they helped me function.
But over time, they didn’t heal the root of what I was going through — and instead, they opened the door to chemical dependence.
My condition worsened.
I lost relationships. I lost my job. I was buried in debt.
Even going to the lobby to check my mail felt terrifying.
My nervous system was screaming at me 24/7 to stay hidden.
I was drowning — physically, mentally, emotionally.
Eventually, I hit a breaking point.
And that’s when I said:

From that moment on, everything changed.
My healing journey wasn’t just about surviving anymore — it became a mission.
Every tool I tested, every insight I gained, every medical appointment I endured… it all became data for the future I was going to build helping others.
Purpose Turned Into Power
This second pillar in the 7 Pillars of Trauma Recovery reframed everything.
Every physical therapy session. Every exhausting grocery store trip. Every battle with chronic pain and dissociation.
All of it was no longer just about surviving.
It was about building something. Documenting what worked and what didn’t.
Turning chaos into structure.
It gave me purpose — and that gave me power.
And purpose fuels discipline.
The more I tied my daily recovery to a greater calling, the easier it became to follow through — even on the hardest days.
It’s Not About Perfection — It’s About Progress
I’m not saying everyone has to become a trauma coach, therapist, or practitioner.
“Making recovery your career” doesn’t mean turning your pain into your job.
It means treating your healing journey with the same focus, structure, and commitment you would bring to a job that truly matters to you.

This mindset helped me rebuild myself piece by piece.
It grounded me when everything felt chaotic.
And when I wanted to give up, it reminded me that I wasn’t just doing this for me — I was laying a path that others could follow.
Taking care of your recovery now doesn’t just help you heal — it sets you up to be a steady, grounded presence for others in the future.
It makes you more emotionally available in relationships, more focused and effective in the workplace, and more resilient in the face of adversity.
I made a commitment to make recovery my career — and now I’m helping others do the same.
If you’re struggling, it might be time to make recovery your career too.
