How to Stop Suppressing Your Emotions: My Story
If you’re anything like me, you have spent much of your life cut off from your emotions. The idea of letting them out felt impossible — too risky, too overwhelming.
I believed my emotions would place a burden on others and that they were dangerous to share — expressing them would only get me hurt.
I carried an endless supply of excuses for why I shouldn’t express myself. But beneath all of that was something more sinister: a part of me that valued myself so little that I couldn’t even prioritize the expression of my own emotions.
Where Suppression Begins
The devaluing of oneself can happen for many reasons. For me, it began with early childhood trauma. I learned to prioritize the wellbeing of others over myself.
At the time, I thought my efforts were noble — putting others first. What could be wrong with that? The problem was, I was just a child — one who had taken on the responsibility of providing emotional stability for everyone around him. Other kids, adults, even strangers became part of this self-appointed role. I became the emotional fixer, constantly managing instability wherever I saw it.

The strange thing is, no one told me to do this. My early experiences conditioned me to suppress my emotions, but no one explicitly asked me to manage everyone else’s. Yet somehow, I took on that role.
Beneath it all, I was wounded — and that wound made me desperate to shield others from the pain I knew too well. It might have seemed honorable, but it was a flawed strategy from the start.
The Hidden Cost of Suppressing Emotions
In trying to protect myself and others, I was actually robbing people of the chance to feel, process, and regulate their own emotions. My intent was to help, but my insecurity turned me into an emotional deflector.
I used humor and distraction to steer people away from conflict, tension, and sadness.

Over time, I became remarkably skilled at reading the room — sensing when tension was about to surface and stepping in before anyone even noticed. Conflict became both my enemy and my specialty.
But managing this role came at a cost. [Learn more]
As I grew into adulthood, the weight of this self-imposed peacekeeping began to crush me. The outgoing, cheery version of myself slowly faded into someone I hardly recognized. I turned to substances and reckless behaviors, and my capacity for real connection dwindled.
After a serious concussion, I could no longer keep up the act. So I did the only thing I thought I could: I pushed everyone away. Isolation felt like my only option. But the longer I stayed there, the harder it became to imagine rejoining the world. Panic, fear, anxiety, and a deep lack of confidence left me incapacitated. [Learn more about my story here]
Yet even in that darkness, a question remained: can you actually learn how to stop suppressing your emotions?
So, Can You Learn How to Stop Suppressing Your Emotions?
While there’s no quick fix for years of suppression, I can promise you this: I spent most of my life hiding my emotions, and today I can express them freely. With practice, you can create that same freedom within yourself.
One powerful tool is Reframing — something I teach in my 7 Day Resilience Reset. Here’s how it works:

When you do this, speak to yourself with the same conviction and kindness you’d use if you were encouraging someone you love. At first, you may be shocked by how often you catch yourself being harsh. But the more you notice, the more you can shift.
This repeatable “checks and balances” practice retrains your inner voice to advocate for you, not against you — transforming your harshest critic into your greatest ally.
How Can Reframing Teach You How to Stop Suppressing Your Emotions?
Reframing is one of the best tools for breaking suppression. The next time you feel a strong emotion rising, notice the words in your head telling you NOT to express it — and write them down.
Ask yourself:
- Do those words feel true?
- Do they make you angry?
- Do they feel unfair?
Next, imagine the person you love most in your life. How would you encourage them to express the same emotion you’re suppressing? Write that version down.
Then take it one step further:

Watch your face as you repeat them — each time with more honesty, more conviction, more belief. Push until you truly believe what you’re saying.
Because here’s the thing: you’re not just saying words. You’re teaching yourself that you deserve expression. You’re becoming your own advocate — your own hero.
What If There Are No Words, Only Feelings?
Sometimes, suppression shows up less like words and more like a sensation — a tightening in the chest, a lump in the throat, or a clamping down.
If that’s the case, write down the sensation and translate it into the message it might be sending you. For example:

Trust your first impression — your gut is usually right.
Once you’ve uncovered the message, reframe it. That clamping down sensation and the message “Don’t let them see you upset” can become:
“It’s safe to let people see me upset. Hiding my emotions only hurts me and keeps me disconnected from the world.”
The key is transforming that inner command to hide into an invitation to experience freedom — the kind of self-expression you’d want for someone you love.
Why Learning How To Stop Suppressing Your Emotions Matters
Reframing isn’t just a mental trick — it’s the first crack in the old belief that your emotions are “wrong.” Each time you practice, you create more space to breathe, more room to be yourself. You’re showing your nervous system it’s safe to feel. You’re reminding yourself that your voice matters.
This is how change begins: one reframed thought, one brave moment of allowing, one small act of standing on your own side. With every repetition, suppression loses its grip, and authenticity takes root.
The real freedom comes when you can soften in the very moment you feel yourself clamping down — not later, not in hindsight, but right when it matters most.
That’s what I’ll guide you through in my next article. Because this isn’t only about learning how to stop suppressing your emotions — it’s about reclaiming your freedom, your resilience, and the truest version of yourself.
